Metal Injection Molding – MIM

PMIeng provides Metal Injection Molding to a variety of industries.


This is a combination of plastic injection molding and powder metal. The tooling consists of an aluminum die, similar to a plastic injection molding tool. The media is a combination of extremely fine powder metal mixed with a polymer binder in about a 75/25 ratio. The cavity in the tool will be about 20 to 25% oversize of the intended finished part.


The media is injected and the parts taken out and sintered. The sintering process pulls the binder out and compresses the metal to 98% or so density. The sintering process is delicate as the parts can droop and sag if not set up properly. Extreme cross sectional differences make sintering difficult.


But, for a part that is designed for the process; tolerances can be held extremely tight and strength characteristics are very good. Some limitations are the size of the part is typically smaller than a golf ball and minimum quantities are needed to optimize the sintering batch.
